Marcons Nasal Swab
Professional clinical interpretation included.
Multiple Antibiotic-Resistant Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci (MARCoNS) are antibioticresistant bacteria that may colonise the nasal passages.
In certain individuals, particularly those with a history of mould exposure or chronic sinus concerns, nasal colonisation may be considered as part of a broader clinical investigation.
MARCoNS refers to antibiotic-resistant coagulase-negative Staphylococci that may colonise the deeper nasal passages.
These bacteria are capable of developing resistance to multiple antibiotics, which can make eradication more complex when clinically indicated.
The assessment involves culturing bacteria from a nasal swab sample to determine:
• Presence of coagulase-negative Staphylococci
• Antibiotic resistance patterns
• Whether MARCoNS is identified
In certain individuals — particularly those with a history of chronic sinus concerns, repeated antibiotic exposure, or suspected mould exposure — MARCoNS testing may be considered as part of a broader clinical evaluation.
The presence of MARCoNS does not automatically indicate active infection or causation of symptoms.
Results are interpreted alongside:
• Environmental exposure history
• Immune and inflammatory markers
• Sinus and nasal symptom profile
• Broader multi-system presentation
Findings may help guide targeted and individualised management strategies where appropriate.
Testing may be relevant for individuals with:
• Suspected mould or water-damaged building exposure
• Persistent nasal congestion or sinus symptoms
• Chronic fatigue presentations
• Recurrent headaches or migraines
• A history of frequent or prolonged antibiotic use
• Ongoing multi-system symptoms without clear explanation
